Science tells us that, however polluted the air outside the house, the air inside the house is always more polluted.  This is easy to believe when you think about house dust, people, pets, the household chemicals under the sink and chemicals that may be given off by building materials, furniture and furnishings.

When I went to a course on making your house ecologically sound and they told me about whole house ventilation I had it installed within a week. A central fan in the ceiling draws air from open doors and windows into the roof space and expels the air from the roof space out through the eaves. This brings fresh outside air into the house and replaces the stale air in the roof space. It can only be an improvement.

Within an hour of installation, my house felt and smelled better. Now I run the ventilation for an hour every morning, and I can feel the fresh breeze blowing in the doors while the fan is running.  It costs one cent per hour to run, and on hot days the hot air in the roof space is replaced with cool air. At the end of a hot day when the air outside is cooler than the air inside, you can expel the hot air and cool the house down.

If you are thinking of installing air conditioning, try installing whole house ventilation first and see how much of the problem it solves. Air conditioning does not improve the air quality, in fact, any sensitive person can tell you it makes it worse, while whole house ventilation means you are breathing better air when you are at home.
